The 83rd annual
Salisbury Ski Jumps
including
- Friday evening target jumping, under the lights
- Saturday morning Salisbury Junior Jumping
- Saturday afternoon Salisbury Invitation Jump
- Sunday Eastern USSA Ski Jumping Championships
|
hosted by the
Salisbury Winter Sports Association
at John Satre Hill - Salisbury, Connecticut
February 6-8, 2009
After a bitter cold January with plenty of natural snow, the weather gods dealt a late blow to the Salisbury Winter Sports Association with a sudden warm-up on tournament weekend. Friday evening was cold, with temperatures in the mid-teens, but Saturday was very pleasant as the mercury rose to the thirties and the air was barely moving.
The field of competitors wasn't large, with seven jumpers entering the Friday evening Target Jump and 19 names on the entry list for Saturday and Sunday's big hill competitions. However the quality of the jumping was impressive with lots of long and graceful jumps. In addition to the usual Eastern Division club jumpers,s we welcomed several New Hampshire High School competitors from Kennett, Hopkinton and Concord High Schools.
|
Friday Evening Target Jump
Peter Frenette won the Target Jump and pocketed a handsome check provided by Churchill Brothers Builders of Sharon CT.

Ski Jumping Competition on the 20 meter hill
Saturday morning, February 7
On the 20 meter hill, the simplified scoring system was used, with small judges scores.
The three judges scores were added to the distance in meters to give the total score for each jump. In the small hill results that were submitted to us, some inconsistencies were found in the values, so all of scores were recalculated.
The distances below are given in feet and were converted to meters while computing the scores. The distances of the trial-round jumps are also shown.

The End of an Era
FIS Ski Jumping judge Ken Tokle, nephew of Torger and Art, began his judging in
1967. Sunday's competition was Ken's last judging assignment as he
officially retired following the last competitive ride. Mark Levasseur, Vice President of the Nordic Officials Association introduced Association President Peter Claus who presented
Ken with a plaque in recognition and appreciation of his 42 years of service to the sport of ski jumping.

Nordic Combined Competition
[JO Qualifier]
Jumping on Sat. Feb 7, XC Sun. morning Feb. 8
This was a JO qualifier for J-2 competitors, but several more skiers joined the fun.
The JOQ event consisted of the two jumps in Saturday's big hill competition, followed by a 5 km cross country race. Several others followed the same rules, but Nate Capone, who jumped only on the smaller hills, raced in the K-64 J-2 group, and raced well.
Younger skiers raced 3 km. Some used K-64 jumping results and others just raced XC not linked to a jumping event.
Organizers used time handicap (at the start of the race) of one minute for every 15 points of jumping score (4 seconds per point) for all Nordic Combined classes.

2009 Eastern USSA Ski Jumping Championships
[Final JO Qualifier]
Sunday, February 8
The full force of the February thaw struck Saturday night with warm winds and rain. By Sunday, temperatures were in the 40's and gusty winds continued to build. The snow on both the tower and the landing was soft and the hill crew went to work. They ski-packed the landing and regrooved the track, then applied snow cement (magic chemicals that harden the snow).
The competition was finally begun after 2:30 and was shortened to just two scored rounds. With difficult conditions, organizers wisely reversed the jumping order, sending the most experienced skiers first.
The flag man did a good job of holding the jumpers until the wind had moderated, but still four skiers opted not to compete in the difficult conditions. Safety was the first priority and it worked, there were no falls.

Each year, the Salisbury Winter Sports Association recognizes several different achievements
with special awards, and this year, Peter Frenette, who jumps for NYSEF in Lake Placid and lives in nearby Saranac Lake, NY, took home most of the special awards. Here are two:
The Sig Evensen Award is given annually to the top junior jumper in the Eastern Championships. It was presented by Sig's son, long time ski jumper Sven Evensen.

|

The SWSA Cup is awarded to the overall winner of the Eastern Championships. The cup replaces the Satre Trophy which was retired in 2003 by Taylor Hoffman of Lake Placid.
|
A few other skiers were recognized with special awards.

Zach Daniels took the Ladies Cup, awarded to the top scorer in the Eastern Championships who is not competing in the winner's class.
|

Jon Farnham took home the Earle Murphy & Don West Award as the top Masters Class jumper. Here Farnham is joined by Murphy (left) and West, long time Masters ski jumpers. With no Masters competing on Sunday, SWSA hosts ruled that Saturday's winner should be honored.

The 2009 Junior Olympic Team
The Eastern Championship is the final qualifying event for the team to represent the Eastern Division at the Junior Olympics, a Junior-2 event to be held in early March in Anchorage, Alaska. The final item in Sunday's awards program is the introduction of the Junior Olympics team. In a change from the last few years, the JO event has added a guest Class for Junior-1 competitors. With a very long trip on tap, this year's team is small, with only five skiers.

Right to left: Duncan Sweny and Joseph Merrow (both J-1, of Hopkinton High School), Coach Matt Cook, J-2 skiers Zach Daniels and Luke Daniels.
(Andover Outing Club). Missing from the presentation was Nina Lussi of Lake Placid who was just returning from jumping in the World Junior Nordic Championships in Slovakia.
