Empire State Winter Games Nordic Combined Competition

After the K-90 medals were awarded, a motorcade carried Nordic Combined
competitors with organizers, coaches, parents, girlfriends, and others to the
Biathlon Stadium at Mt van Hoevenberg, where the cross country races finished a long
day of competition for these Empire State Games participants. ESG competitors took their jumping points from the 48 meter hill, both jumps. The course was a 2 km loop where the Open Class competitors and Scholastic Class Boys raced three laps (6 km), while the Ladies did two laps (4 km) on a good racing surface of nice fast snow. |

The Empire State games offers no age groups. The only categories are Open Class and Scholastic Class, and the latter sometimes brings together an odd mix of ages, sizes and abilities. On the podium, Spencer Knickerbocker celebrates his well earned victory. He and silver medalist Zach Daniels are both students at Northwood School in Lake Placid, a privilege afforded them by their families so that they can train for ski jumping and cross country skiing in the Olympic Village. Bronze medalist Nate Capone started jumping late, coming to Nordic Combined as a very accomplished cross country skier. James Fisher (above, far left),a senior at Plymouth NH High School, stands six-foot-six and looks twice as big as his neighbor, Kyle Horner in blue. Kyle was advised by officials to finish his race after two hard laps, while Warren Bartlett gets our gold star for battling for the longest time out on the course. Miles Lussi was just getting over a pain in his foot, injured in Salisbury two weeks earlier. Matt Doyle skied the six km course four seconds faster than Luke Daniels but had no chance to overcome Luke's 92 second head start, earned with his superior jumping. But perhaps the bravest performance of the afternoon was put in by James Fisher, who hadn't pre-registered for the Nordic Combined event and so is not listed in the results. James, who showed up with two skate-skis of two different brands, had never tried cross country skiing until five days before this event. He survived all three laps of the hilly Biathlon course, admitting later that his knees hurt. Two gold stars!

Before the Empire State Games jumping began, NYSEF coaches
organized a small hill, non-medal competition on the 18 meter jump for smaller kids.
The three judges used the simplified scoring system with small limited scores.
All but two of the 25 competitors were listed as local NYSEF skiers.

NYSEF Coach David McCahill brought a huge group of enthusiastic kids from the K-18 jumping competition for a non-medal Nordic Combined race. David looked like the Pied Piper as he took the kids on a guided warm-up tour of their 1.2 km course. Junior-5 skiers (ages 9 and under) did one lap while the Junior-4 racers (ages 10-11) did two laps for 2.4 km. |
