After a string of a dozen gorgeous late winter days -- maple sugar weather -- wind and rain were forecast for Sunday, March 14, so Casey Colby hurried to move up the Lions Club jumping to Saturday. This was the second change to the Lions Club jumping schedule, as the small hill event (K-18) had been split off and delayed one week to become part on the Eastern Bill Koch cross country (and now, jumping) festival. Conditions on Saturday morning were reasonable for jumping both 48 and 90 meter hills the but degraded as the day went on.
The big hill jumpers finished the morning with a brief long-standing competition.
Casey gave us the top three finishers in the Lions Club K90 Long Standing competition. He said later that there were about seven participants including the Lussi sisters and Olympian Peter Frenette, none of whom jumped up to par. We understand that it was a distance-only event in which each skier chose his or her own start point at the top of the tower. Here are the top three:
1. Andrew Bliss 102 meters
2. Spencer Knickerbocker 95 meters
3. Zach Daniels 86 meters
Jumping continued after lunch on the 48 meter jump, leading into the three o'clock competition.
The hill was in nice spring condition with a solid base topped by an inch or so of moist corn snow. Casey kept the track firm with a couple of applications of chemicals as the competition went on. It was nice to see new faces A.J. King of Andover and Jeremy Downs of Salisbury, as well as old faces Chris Jones (ex-Proctor) and Geoff Howe of Gunstock, but the biggest treat of all was to welcome Saranac Lake's Peter Frenette back from his terrific Olympic experience. Peter shaded Andrew Bliss by the thinnest possible margin, one tenth of a point!
