The Three Day Schedule:
History was made in October 2008 at the annual Flaming Leaves Ski Jumping Festival in Lake Placid when USSA sanctioned its National Ski Jumping Championships to be contested for the first time on a plastic surface rather than on snow. These were officially the 2009 championships, that is, the event for the 2008-2009 season which begins in the summer of 2008. Championship events included Nordic Combined and Special Jumping for both men and women.
"It's an outdoor sport!"
That's the standard response when somebody grumbles that he got a bad shake on the air. The three days of the Flaming Leaves ski jumping couldn't have been more beautiful -- for specators. But the winds on Friday for the official training were atrocious. The general wind seemed to be a tailwind, but sometimes it generated that huge barrel-roll effect that brought good air up the landing about to the 55 meter point. However, most of the time, the wind blew from the takeoff down the knoll and brought the athletes down out of the air as surely as if there was an invisible fish-line and a hidden reel, pulling them down.
On Saturday, for the National Championships, things were much better. Gone was that horrible tailwind down the knoll, but the air up the landing was still on-and-off, giving a huge advantage to those good skiers who got the strong lift. On Sunday, the report was "light and variable" but the air up the landing was still on-and-off, though not quite as strong an influence as for Saturday's competition.
Lodwick Sighting!
Last month, reading a report on a training camp that our Nordic Combined boys had in Norway, we were surprised to see Todd Lodwick's name. Well, his name is here too, in the results posted below. Yup! Todd's back. After a year off, Lodwick has discovered that he has some more "want-to" left and he's committed to resuming his career in Nordic combined competition. In training on Friday he looked exactly like a guy who hadn't jumped in over a year, but when he pulled on his competition bib on Saturday morning, the real Todd Lodwick was back. The contrast was so striking that someone asked Todd "Who was that skiing in your suit yesterday?" He answered "I don't know, but it's the real me today."
Yup -- 97.5 meters. That's the real Todd. Welcome back!
"Let 'em Buck!"
The competition jury was praised for their boldness, letting the jumping continue even with several of the second-flight athletes posting jumps of 90 meters and more. Bill Demong showed that they had made the correct call when he flew 100.5 meters, staying with his ride right to the end and finishing with beautiful, solid Telemark landing. It was a sight to behold. Way to ski, Billy!
